How to Clean the Most Common Carpet Spills

Keeping your carpets clean can be very difficult but knowing how to clean the most common carpet spills will keep your carpeting cleaner and in good shape for longer. Whether it is a child’s birthday party or visitors and family for a special event causing the spills, it is usually down to you to figure out how to get rid of the stain and fast.

A big part of removing stains is the ability to act quickly.

The faster you can take action, the more likely it is that the stain will not set. In all cases, do not rub or scrub since that could cause the stain to spread and become more ingrained which makes your job much harder, if not impossible. The most important thing to understand is that the use of chemicals, soaps or even more natural cleansers like vinegar are unnecessary and potentially harmful to your carpets.

We have separated our cleaning recommendations into two categories – whether it requires hot/warm water or cold water for cleaning. Understanding this is important because some stains can never be cleaned by using the incorrect water temperature.

Warm or Hot Water Cleaning. It is inevitable that your brand new cream carpets will experience a seemingly devastating spill of some sort. So it is not a matter of “if” but rather “when.” Stains that require cleaning with warm or hot water include most things like drinks or ink or dirt. The method for cleaning the mess is as follows: First, soak a towel in water and wring out most of the water. Microwave the towel for about 30 seconds to make it steamy. Put the towel on the spot and leave it for a few minutes. Then pat or step down on it. The goal is to have the heat/steam combination transfer the stain to the towel. Note again that this method does not require any soap, vinegar, chemicals…nothing. The goal is to lift the stain without saturating your carpets with any types of cleansers. This helps reduce a buildup of solutions from forming on your carpeting.

Cold Water Cleaning. Life happens, including bloody noses, bumps, and scrapes. It is just unfortunate when those things happen on your carpeting. An important thing to note is to always use cold water instead of hot when cleaning blood out of your carpet because blood coagulates with heat. Cold water will prevent the blood from permeating further into the carpet. Similar to above, wet a towel but with cold water and apply it to the affected area to pull out as much of the blood as possible. Blot dry with a clean paper towel and repeat as needed.
