How to regrout tile, home improvement graphics

How to Regrout Your Tile

Regrouting can do wonders for your tiled surfaces.

Over time your tile grout will deteriorate and wear down leaving areas where there appears to be little or no grout at all. When this happens you have a few options – you can replace the tile/grout or regrout your existing tile. Replacing the tiled area with new tile and grout can be just as time-consuming as regrouting (regrouting can take even longer at times) however, regrouting can be much less expensive, especially if you do it yourself and plus, the materials are cheap. Choosing to regrout is also a great choice when you are dealing with antique tile that is original to the building, and you are wanting to preserve its historic character.

This video will take you step-by-step through the easy process. Note that the same process can be applied to a tile floor. Video courtesy of Diy.com/B&Q.

How to clean the most common carpet spills, kids birthday party

How to Clean the Most Common Carpet Spills

Keeping your carpets clean can be very difficult but knowing how to clean the most common carpet spills will keep your carpeting cleaner and in good shape for longer. Whether it is a child’s birthday party or visitors and family for a special event causing the spills, it is usually down to you to figure out how to get rid of the stain and fast.

A big part of removing stains is the ability to act quickly.

The faster you can take action, the more likely it is that the stain will not set. In all cases, do not rub or scrub since that could cause the stain to spread and become more ingrained which makes your job much harder, if not impossible. The most important thing to understand is that the use of chemicals, soaps or even more natural cleansers like vinegar are unnecessary and potentially harmful to your carpets.

We have separated our cleaning recommendations into two categories – whether it requires hot/warm water or cold water for cleaning. Understanding this is important because some stains can never be cleaned by using the incorrect water temperature.

Warm or Hot Water Cleaning. It is inevitable that your brand new cream carpets will experience a seemingly devastating spill of some sort. So it is not a matter of “if” but rather “when.” Stains that require cleaning with warm or hot water include most things like drinks or ink or dirt. The method for cleaning the mess is as follows: First, soak a towel in water and wring out most of the water. Microwave the towel for about 30 seconds to make it steamy. Put the towel on the spot and leave it for a few minutes. Then pat or step down on it. The goal is to have the heat/steam combination transfer the stain to the towel. Note again that this method does not require any soap, vinegar, chemicals…nothing. The goal is to lift the stain without saturating your carpets with any types of cleansers. This helps reduce a buildup of solutions from forming on your carpeting.

Cold Water Cleaning. Life happens, including bloody noses, bumps, and scrapes. It is just unfortunate when those things happen on your carpeting. An important thing to note is to always use cold water instead of hot when cleaning blood out of your carpet because blood coagulates with heat. Cold water will prevent the blood from permeating further into the carpet. Similar to above, wet a towel but with cold water and apply it to the affected area to pull out as much of the blood as possible. Blot dry with a clean paper towel and repeat as needed.

These are the most common spills and how to clean them but what if it is something else? Well, you always have access to the TruClean Spill Hotline. Just give us a call, and we can talk you through it, right over the phone. Best part? It is free. Just call 727-238-4818.

Top Carpet Cleaning Mistakes

Do-it-yourself carpet cleaning mistakes can not only be frustrating when things go wrong but can also cost you more money in the long run when you have to fix the mistakes. Many people tackle the job of a stubborn stain themselves only to find that the spot and/or smell will not go away. Trying lots of different chemicals can damage your carpeting and reduce the life of it.

Avoid damaging your carpet by not making these common carpet cleaning mistakes:

1. Waiting too long – Ok, we have all done it, we either wait for a more convenient time to clean up that spill or possibly forget about it all together. Unfortunately, the longer it sits, the more set in the stain becomes by drying and soaking into the carpet padding. It will also cause wicking when you do try to remove the stain. So, always try to clean up the mess right after it happens, even if you are in a hurry.

2. Using the wrong cleaner – When you use the wrong cleaner on your stain, it can permanently damage your carpets or cause unpleasant discoloration to the area. Always read the label and make sure you are following the directions properly.

3. Forgetting to test first – So, you just read a tip on Pinterest that says to use some strange household chemical to clean your carpets… We’re totally down with cleaning hacks but make sure it isn’t going to damage your carpets. ALWAYS test in an inconspicuous place first and then try it on your stain.

4. Scrubbing, scrubbing, scrubbing – The harder you scrub the cleaner your carpets get, right? Not so fast. Scrubbing your carpets to roughly can damage the carpet fibers. It can also (gasp) make the stain worse by driving it deeper into the carpeting and padding. Rather than a rough scrub, try blotting instead.

5. Using too much cleanser – Just like scrubbing harder does not produce the desired results, using too much cleanser can also be an issue. Too much cleanser can damage carpets but something you probably didn’t know – solution buildup can leave dirt-attracting residue, completely opposite of what you want! When it comes to cleanser on your carpets, less is more.

6. Using cleaning equipment – We’ve all rented the carpet cleaner from the local grocery store. While this can seem like a really good idea, these machines often have issues that cause them to leave too much cleanser/residue (see #5) and even mold issues. If you use one of these machines, just make sure to look it over for signs it has been cared for.

7. Skipping regular professional maintenance – I know, I know we are a floor cleaning company so of course we are going to say this but hear us out. Professional carpet cleaners know all of these tips and common mistakes plus a LOT more about how to clean your floors. Why not utilize their expertise? Plus, they use professional grade machinery that is maintained and tested routinely which will not leave excess residue or damage your carpeting. Many people are surprised at how affordable professional carpet cleaning can be.
